The “Inland Empire” is a busy place where everyone is on the move. Long drives and big dreams are a way of life here — and so is the reality of drug and alcohol abuse. But if addiction has started to crowd out the rest of your life, there is a path forward.
Many people struggling with addiction need the structure of inpatient or residential treatment, while others do well in an outpatient program. Either way, Coachella Valley Recovery Center has you covered. Continue reading to learn more about substance abuse in San Bernardino, and how you or someone you love can reach out for help.
San Bernardino County’s public health pages track opioid trends, while California’s Overdose Prevention Initiative publishes county indicators for fatal and non-fatal overdoses, emergency department visits, and prescribing patterns.
Since 2017, fentanyl has played a growing role in opioid addiction, mirroring what California (and most of the nation) has seen. There are a few bright spots, however. First and foremost, San Bernardino County sees lower-than-average death rates in the state of California, at least when it comes to opioids and amphetamines. Moreover, the county’s overdose deaths continue to decline, according to provisional data from the National Center for Health Statistics. [1]
However, this doesn’t cancel out the very real risk from alcohol and drugs. Non-fatal overdoses tell the rest of the story. Emergency department non-fatal overdose data often runs higher than death counts and helps target where naloxone, outreach, and addiction treatment are most needed.
Clinicians in the Inland Empire also report more polysubstance cases — fentanyl mixed with methamphetamine or alcohol — which raises overdose risk even further. Another especially concerning trend in Southern California is the influx of fentanyl-tainted pills. This has resulted in people overdosing on fentanyl without ever realizing that the drug was in their system.
Remember: keep naloxone on hand, use test strips when available, and don’t use alone. If an opioid use disorder is present, ask about MOUD (buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone) alongside counseling, and reach out for help as soon as possible.
If a situation is urgent, call 988 for suicide and crisis support, or 911 for a medical emergency.
